Dog Shows

:

What is creepier a dog show or a beauty pageant for pre-teenage girls?

Answer
I dont see nothing wrong with dog shows- just proud breeders showing off their best examples of a breed. But pre-teen beauty pageants? That is creepy , when they put makeup on girls, high heels, sexy outfits, and make an 8 year old look like a 25 year old hooker. Even creepier is the fact that the PARENTS put them up to it! Usually, girls that age dont understand that they are being paraded as sex objects in front of sick adults (including their parents) who apparently fantasize about having sex with them. If this was not the case, the little girls would be dressed in outfits that were cute and make them look like a kid- which they are. At best, these girls will be winners and learn that as long as you look good, people will love you more, for all the wrong reasons. And for the losers, they will develop body image issues and neuroses which will only get worse when they hit their teens, and often last lifelong. Never seen a dog develop bulimia, or even care whether he won or los t.

What does it mean when a dog shows the whites of his eyes?
How can you make your dog think you are the dominate member of the household? Also if your dog is licking his chops a lot and there is no food or isn't hungry, does this mean he is annoyed? A dog that thinks it is submissive would never attack the leader if it became annoyed with them would it?

Answer
that is called whale eyes, Signs of fear or concern: lowered stance, tail down or tucked under, tail wagging in a quick, frantic buzz; looking away or turning head away to look so that whites of eyes show ("whale eye"); dilated pupils. Dogs often bark out of fear, in an attempt to keep a distance between themselves and the Big Scary Thing, especially if they are cornered, fenced in, or on a leash. Dogs lick their lips as a sign of submission but could be doing it because they have an upset tummy too. A submissive dog would never attack a dominate dog/person unless it thought it's life was in danger. Obed training and the NILIF/ No Free Lunch methods all teach the dog you are boss, if you use them!

Is a dog show from germany worth more in the u.s?
Miniature Schnauzer if i bring him from gemany

Answer
Do you mean "is a miniature schnauzer show dog from Germany worth more in the US?"
I think it depends on his line, who's in the pedigree.
Does he have any championships from Germany or elsewhere?
If he has something to offer the dogs in the US he could be of more value. If he finishes quickly and is a successful special he could be of great value -although not necessarily monetary.

Dog show pros... treats in the mouth? MMMMMM....?
I'm pretty new to watching dog shows and last night I noticed several of the handlers put treats in their mouths. Why?

Is it a pocket thang? I noticed most of the dresses have no pockets. Or is it to get the dog's attention upward?

I get some treats from the local feed store that smell pretty good, but I dunno...

Thanks in advance.

Answer
okay so a lot of the answers are dumb on here so let me explain it from a handlers point of view. As a dog handler we put the treats in our mouth so that we can roll the show leads in out hands without it getting in the way, to keep the dogs attention off our hands and most importantly we do it because when we are gaiting or running our dogs in the patterns we are trying to show the judge that our dog has the proper reach and drive or movement for its breed and if the dog looks up at us/hand or to the our side with our other hand then it throws off their gate and makes them look awkward the treats taste awful and sometimes it makes me gag but we do what we have to in order to show our dogs to their best abilities.. do you understand now? and in comment to other people, you take the treat out of your mouth when you are working for expression so they can see the treat! and make them perk their ears and show expression in their face the technique is out of sight out of mind so they don't think about it being in your mouth, however in obedience then you bait from your mouth because then you want them looking up at you which is called spitting but NEVER in conformation which is what you are seeing at Westminster.

How come the Westminster Dog Show ignores ability (running, scent, obedience) tests?
So according to the show criteria (http://dogs.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Westmins... the following is how the dogs are scored:
Overall appearance=30 points (looks), Head=20 points (looks), Body=20 points (looks), Coat texture and color=10 points, Gait=20 points. I understand that looks and health/vitality go hand in hand, but whatever happened to other aspects such as intelligence, obedience, ability to sniff (hounds), ability to run (agility), etc etc? Certain dogs were bred for certain purposes (e.g. beagles should have good sense of smell), but how do we know if the top beagle has a good sense of smell? By making Uno a champion (based mostly on looks) without verifying that he has the best sense of smell, we're not breeding based on "true" form, but mostly, on looks.

Isn't there anything wrong with this picture?

Answer
I think that dogs should be titled in conformation as well as other trials - field trials, agility, etc. Uno is a pretty beagle, but if I were looking for beagle pups, I'd also be concerned with their ability to hunt and scent - hence I'd want the parents to be titled in relevant trials.

On a lighter, sillier note, I think the Herding group shouldn't be ran around by handlers - the dogs should have to herd the handler around. Perhaps the handler can point with a cane where the dog should run?
